Standing at the eastern boundary of Historic Jeddah, Bab Makkah is a celebrated stone gateway with twin crenelated towers that historically sent forth caravans and pilgrims heading to Mecca.
Bab Makkah, or the Makkah Gate, stands as the most famous historic portal of Jeddah, situated along Old Mecca Al Moukarramah Road on the eastern edge of the historic district. Originally integrated into the ancient defensive stone wall that encircled the city, the monument served for generations as the primary exit for caravans, merchants, and Hajj pilgrims departing eastward toward Mecca. The imposing structure is constructed from traditional stone masonry and features twin crenelated towers that flank an expansive pointed central archway. Beyond its historic defensive and logistical role, the gate serves as the eastern entryway to Souk Al-Alawi, one of the oldest and most vibrant traditional markets in Al Balad. Today, Bab Makkah remains an enduring symbol of Jeddah’s historic identity as the hospitable threshold to the holy city of Mecca.
