Historic Jeddah (Al-Balad)

The Jeddah Historic District, locally referred to as Al-Balad, forms the historic urban core of Jeddah, dating back to its establishment in the seventh century AD as the primary maritime gateway for pilgrims traveling to Mecca. The district is celebrated for its distinctive architectural heritage, highlighted by towering residential buildings constructed from fossilized Red Sea coral limestone. These traditional multi-tiered houses are detailed with elaborate wooden roshan lattice bay windows, crafted to provide ventilation while ensuring family privacy. In recognition of its outstanding cultural significance and preserved urban fabric, Al-Balad was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2014. Today, visitors can explore a walkable network of centuries-old souks, venerable mosques, and lively public squares that showcase centuries of maritime and trading history.
